Isla de Vieques: The Perfect Caribbean Getaway

Isla de Vieques is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico that is quickly becoming a popular tourist destination. The island is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and abundance of wildlife.

One of the most popular things to do in Vieques is to visit Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent bay that is home to millions of tiny organisms that emit a blue glow when disturbed. Visitors can take a boat tour of the bay and paddle through the water, creating a mesmerizing light show.

Another popular activity in Vieques is horseback riding. There are several stables on the island that offer guided rides through the countryside. Visitors can also go hiking, biking, or kayaking on the island.

In addition to its natural beauty, Vieques also has a rich history. The island was once used as a U.S. Navy bombing range, but it was decommissioned in 2003 and is now being restored to its natural state. Visitors can learn about the island’s history at the Vieques Museum of Art and History.

Sun Bay Beach

Sun Bay Beach is the most popular beaches on Vieques. This beach is nicely cared for, has a lifeguard, and offers lots of amenities such as bathrooms, showers, and a restaurant. Spend a couple hours on the beach and head back to the Yacht for a mid day lunch!

Town of Esperanza

Esperanza, which means hope in Spanish, is the perfect tourist town. Only a 10-minute walk from Sun Bay Beach, this town consists of a small walk-way full of restaurants along the beach, ATV rentals, colorful boats in the bay, and friendly faces everywhere.

Mosquito Pier

The pier itself is over a mile-long, which makes it a fantastic snorkeling spot. The pier offers calm waters, which are accessible from either the beach or the pier itself. Mosquito Pier is one of the best fishing and snorkeling spots on the island of Vieques.

The Ceiba Tree

"Parque de la Ceiba" The Ceiba tree of Vieques is between 300 and 400 years old. Myth and legends surround this Ceiba tree, which is easy to understand once you’ve seen its size. Wild horses frequently graze around the tree. Vieques has a lot of wild horses, but all the locals seemingly treat them as their pets.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

If you go to Puerto Rico, you must go over to the nearby island of Vieques and visit Mosquito. There are three bioluminescent bays around the island, but this one is by far the most spectacular. If you arrange a kayak tour on a moonless night, it will be best. When we went, there was only a sliver of the moon and it was very dark. We could actually see the light created by fish swimming in the water. If you scooped up water in your hand and let it run down your arm, your arm would glisten! It’s really hard to describe how spectacular this is, one must experience it.
I've taken numerous Bio Bay trips over the years and each has been wonderful; this year we went on the clear kayaks and it was the best yet as you can see the fireworks directly below you. Go when there is little moonlight. The moon rises 50 minutes later each day, so viewing is good to excellent starting 3 or 4 days after the full moon up until the last few days before the next full moon. BTW: streetlights on the south side of the island are being replaced w/ red lights to help nesting turtles and also benefits Bio Bay.
